Learn more about this agency Responsibilities - Works as a member on teams for special projects that involve heavy, unbalanced, and irregular machinery. - Follows instructions to block and brace machinery. - Blocks or braces loads on or in rail-cars and trucks. - Secures a variety of heavy material (e.g., spools of wire, pipes, hoses, steel beams, plant equipment, chains, furniture, boxed items), and electronic components and parts. - Cuts blocks, wedges and parts for wooded bracing to proper size and angle, fitting and installing securely. Makes, fits, and installs wooden bracing to secure odd-shaped boxes arid crates. - Selects and attaches proper tag lines, cables, slings, chains, to various types of crane equipment for the purpose of lifting, positioning, and moving heavy objects from one place to another without damaging the material. - Greases and maintains rigging equipment; performing necessary repairs and adjustments. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time and you have the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education Additional information PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee frequently lifts, holds, and carries moderately heavy objects, such as cables, chains, and shackles. Work involves constant reaching, bending, turning, and movement of hands, feet and arms. The work requires climbing on and off of vehicles. Vehicle operations result in frequent jerks and jolts which expose employees to bruises, cuts and strains. Employee must frequently lift cartons/equipment weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Heavier loads will require assistance. Work requires frequent physical exertion when installing weight handling gear. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is primarily performed in a physical distribution depot environment. Most rigging work will be performed outdoors. Other work may be performed in enclosed warehouses/buildings or outdoor staging/storage areas. The employee is exposed to prevailing weather conditions and air temperatures may vary from 20 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Assignments may be performed in work areas that are noisy with heavy mobile equipment (crane) and MHE traffic. Rigging assignments involve exposure to serious injuries resulting from swinging loads, falling objects, and broken cables/slings. The employee is also subject to cuts, bruises, burns, back strains, broken bones, and other injuries.
